History of Gibson Flying V Black Friday Deals 2011

Gibson produced the first prototypes of the guitar in 1957, by starting the series production the following year. The Flying V 1958 Korina had the body (otherwise known as African limba wood), with sonic properties similar to those of mahogany but lighter and lighter in color. The Flying V, together with the future (today Explorer) and the Moderne, was to form a line of guitars from the line futuristic, designed by then-president Ted McCarty, Gibson's intention to renew the brand image. However, it was a resounding failure of sales, which led to the cessation of production in 1959. In 1963, some specimens were placed on the market assembled with the remaining production, featuring nickel hardware instead of gold. These guitars had some significant differences with respect to V of '58: the essence chosen for the body was mahogany, like the vast majority of solidbody Gibson, and was modified and rounded rear profile of the instrument to ensure greater comfort and lightness . The celebrated blues guitarist Lonnie Mack (which he installed on his Bigsby vibrato a massive V) and Albert King began performing immediately take up new Flying V A few years later, in the second half of the '60s, guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, Dave Davies, and above all, in search of a model from the original and distinctive look, began to use some Flying V. This renewed interest spawned a growing demand from the public, which led Gibson to put this line of guitars in the catalog. Following the example of Hendrix, who modeled a Flying V with psychedelic paint, even guitarists like Carlos Santana, Eddie Van Halen, Pete Townshend, Paul Stanley, KK Downing, Kai Hansen, James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Keith Richards personalize their guitars.
Other guitarists like Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist), Dave Mustaine and Kerry King is clearly inspired the Flying V to create their own templates (but increasingly turned to other manufacturers of musical instruments, Gibson's competitors). Emblematic was its use of hard & heavy perpetrated by guitarist Michael Schenker and became the icon and its flag, logo and integrate it into their groups and playing it constantly inserted with a tail between his legs.

Today we talk about another great icon of the house Gibson Flying V guitar line from the futuristic V-shaped The Flying V was born as a prototype in 1957 and was marketed from '58. After a year off was revived later in '67 and from then on it was consecrated as a myth thanks to the many artists who have used it over the years. The model I am presenting today is the entry level home Gibson Flying V Faded, entry level so to speak since there is absolutely one of the cheapest in the house. The Faded series is characterized by a light coating, satin to the touch and cheaper than lacquer. But we come to a detailed description of the guitar.

Body: 3 pieces of mahogany, from the classic V-shape, color Faded Cherry, satin to the touch. Mount the security lock and a dunlop white pickguard.

Handle: probably the best part of the guitar, 1-piece mahogany, with construction set-neck. The slim profile is the 60 tapes, so to smooth and manageable. Access to keys thanks to the shape of the body is most comfortable at home this unique Gibson. The keyboard is in a beautiful rosewood, 22 frets and medium-scale 24.75, the paddle-blade hosting the copritruss Gibson logo and Grover tuners which have replaced inefficient Gibson Deluxe. The bone nut is shaped like Gibson used to house the way God intended.

Bridge: The bridge is the classic Gibson Tune 'O Matic, one of the best fixed bridge on the market.

Pickups: The pickups are ceramic and are the 496r and 500t in the neck to the bridge. The pickups are powerful and defined, together allow the guitar to climb in many such, especially blues, hard rock and metal. Controls are 3-way switch, 2 volume and 1 tone.

Conclusions: All current V series guitars Gibson have the same characteristics, the differences are mostly cosmetic and this explains why they are all on the same price. This has faded from its price slightly lower than that above, and the satin finish on the handle by a completely different feel from the other. For the rest it is a good guitar, the finish on all models as a low-end Gibson are not exceptional, but the realization of every part of the guitar is designed to be functionally perfect.

PROS: nice big handle.

CONS: not great finishes.

For this clip, I used this washed cherry Flying V I bought in one of them guitar centers for 580 bugs. I like the thin neck of the guitar, even if these 496 and 512 standard humbuckers are somewhat "flat" in sound compared to their bigger sisters. Very sad that one can't hear the very nice piano solo in the middle of the piece, where I play the rythms

The legendary Flying V by Gibson is one of the top guitars of choice for all music afficionados. I bought my first "V" when I toured with the second re-grouping of Screaming Lord Sutch. I have always loved the remarkeable sustain the V can produces even while being beaten with a bratwurst. I now own three V's and would not part with any of them. There durable construction is a bonus as well. I once clubbed an irrate sound technician in the face with one while doing studio work for "The Filth" back in 93. Once while performing with The Defecators I actually used my 2nd V to bat in incoming beer bottle back into the crowd during a show in Hamburg. The action is very light and perfect for doing solo's with your tongue. My 3rd V can be heard on tracks 2, 4 and 5 on Meat Sticks 3rd album..."Whats for lunch".

Everything about The Mighty V,
I just received this book in the mail yesterday and I love it.From design beginnings to a complete model listing with production dates and factories to headstock designs, it's all in here.Theres even a section on the cases!

My first lasting impression from the Flying V was as an 8 year old kid in '65 watching "Shindig" and The Kinks came on.They played "Tired Of Waiting" and there was Dave Davies with his Korina V, playing it with his arm in the fork of the body. Well,this book mentions not only when and where Dave bought his V but how much he paid for it(you won't believe it).

I've been a V fan ever since from Andy Powell to the Schenker Brothers to Dave Meniketti (the first Yesterday and Today album) and Albert King and beyond. I wish the color section was a bit longer but everything else about this book is outstanding. Great detail about the Hendrix "Flying Angels" as he called them with photos of Jimi in action as well.

The "Flying V Wanna-Bees" section is great also with coverage on Epiphone,Dean,Hamer and Ibanez models.

This book is awesome and will give me hours of enjoyment.
Now if I could just find that used Epi '67 style I've been looking for.

Like all classic Gibson guitars, the necks on the new limited edition Reverse Flying Vs are distinguished by one of the more traditional features that have always set them apart--a glued neck joint. Gluing the neck to the body of the guitar insures a "wood to wood" contact, no air space in the neck cavity, and maximum contact between the neck and body, allowing the neck and body to function as a single unit. The result? Better tone, better sustain, and no loose or misaligned necks.

The resilience of this dense and durable wood makes the fingerboard extremely balanced and stable, and gives each chord and note unparalleled clarity and bite. The 12-inch radius of the fingerboard provides smooth note-bending capabilities and eliminates "dead" or "choked out" notes, common occurrences on fingerboards with lesser radiuses. Resilient and less porous, ebony absorbs oils well, allowing it to preserve its rich, beautiful color.

The tune-o-matic bridge, aslo known as the ABR-1, was the brainchild of legendary Gibson president Ted McCarty in 1954. At the time, it was a true revelation in intonation, and set a standard for simplicity and functionality that hsa never been bettered. This pioneering piece of hardware provides a firm seating for the strings, allowing the player to adjust and fine-tune the intonation and string height in a matter of minutes. It also yields a great union between the strings and body, which results in excellent tone and sustain. It is combined with a separate "stopbar" tailpiece, essentially a modified version of the earlier wraparound bridge. To this day, the Tune-o-matic remains the industry standard. It is the epitome of forma nd function in electric guitar bridge design, and is one of the most revered and copied pieces of guitar hardware ever developed.

Electronics
When it comes to guitar electronics, less is definitely better. And that certainly holds true with Gibson's new limited edition Reverse Flying V. Gibson has chosen to install only one volume control, which translates into less resistance between the pickup and the acutal output. This means you end up with nothing but pure tone from the pickup, and one flat-out screaming rock and roll machine.

First off, I'm not a professional. However, to my amateur ears, this is an outstanding guitar and so easy to play, sitting or standing. It is extremely light. My 9-year-old can hold it as well as he holds his Squire mini-caster. It is comfortable to hold and play while sitting. I don't understand the issue some people were mentioning. I have a Gibson -The Paul and Fender USA Jeff Beck Strat and this one will replace both as my favorite, by far. For the crazy low price, this is a huge deal.

My Reverse Flying V is the white model. I love the weight (a little over 5 lbs., the way it balances (it is much easier to play sitting down than a conventional Flying V), the pickups (57 Clasics are excellent low-medium output humbuckers) and the single volume control. I rarely use a tone control, and I dislike the dual volumes on most Gibsons, I usually want to adjust the volume, not change the balance between pickups. The volume control is like that on some other Gibsons in that it goes from 0 volume to about 90% very quickly, and then the majority of the dial is adjusting between 90 and 100%.

The sound is great, the guitar is capable of both good clean and overdriven tones. It is not really suited for metal, although it could handle it in a pinch. A metal guitar would likely have different hardware anyway, a Floyd Rose and hotter pickups.

The single volume control and lack of a tone may be a problem for some players, but I have played a Peavey Wolfgang Special with this setup and have had no problems with it. Another possible issue is that the "arrow" pointing downward may make a lot of guitar stands an awkward fit.

Ok, sure, they don't look the greatest, I'll be the first to admit, but man the tones you can get out of this guitar puts it in a class of its own. I was a little disappointed with the first one I received. It was clearly a previous return, it had some scuffs on the pick guard and finger prints all over it, but Amazon was great about sending me a replacement right away. The people who aren't giving this guitar 5 stars must be playing through some garbage amp, because through any Fender Hot Rod this guitar just screams Gibson tone... I own around 20 guitars, and this is by far my new favorite. You can't touch a made in the USA Gibson that sounds like this for the price. Being as unique as they are, they will only go up in value over the years. From the prototype headstock, to the Ebony fretboard (yes EBONY not Rosewood like the first release) this guitar has collectible written all over it. Try finding a USA gibson with an Ebony fretboard for this price, you won't find another! I also own a couple of the Faded Les Pauls and let me tell you, they may be made in the USA, but they sound like they are made in China. This guitar does take a little bit of set up out of the box. You will need to oil the fret board for sure, it looks really dry, but after a light oiling, its perfect. The action is also set a little high so a few minor adjustments and it will play like butter!

The Gibson Flying V: Introduced in 1958

A certain aura of mystique surrounds the Gibson Flying V. A guitar well ahead of its time when it was introduced in 1958, the Flying V's intense magnetic appeal, powerful sound, and unusually familiar shape have made it one of the most instantly recognizable guitars in the world. Legendary Gibson President Ted McCarty was looking to add a futuristic aspect to the company's image when he introduced the Flying V, and he nailed it. And while some of the greatest guitar players of all-time--including Lonnie Mack and Albert King--immediately embraced the Flying V, it wasn't until Gibson reintroduced the guitar in 1967 that the rest of the world caught on. Guitar Gods like Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, Billy Gibbons, Michael Schenker, and Lenny Kravitz have all succumbed to the Flying V's fascinating allure.

Angled Headstock on the Gibson Flying V

The pointed headstock on the V-Factor X is as typical as it is unique. Like every Gibson headstock, it is carved out of the same piece of mahogany as the neck. It is not a "glued-on" headstock, and the process takes craftsmanship, time, and effort. But the rewards are worth the effort. The headstock is carefully angled at 17 degrees, which increases pressure on the strings and helps them stay in the nut slots. An increase in string pressure also means there is no loss of string vibration between the nut and the tuners, which equals better sustain. A white truss rod cover adds a nice finishing touch to the headstock, and perfectly complements the white pickguard on the V-Factor X body.

The V-Factor: The X Neck Profile on the Gibson Flying V

No guitar neck profiles are more distinguishable than the neck profiles employed on the Gibson models of today. The more traditional '50s neck profile is the thicker, more rounded contour, emulating the neck shapes of Gibson’s iconic models of the late 1950s. The '60s neck profile is considered the more modern, slim-tapered contour most commonly associated with the Gibson models of the early 1960s. The neck on Gibson's V-Factor X has the best of both worlds--it is a hybrid between the '50s rounded contour and the '60s slim-taper profile. As with all Gibson necks, it is machined in Gibson's rough mill using wood shapers to make the initial cuts. Once the fingerboard gets glued on, the rest--including the final sanding--is done by hand. That means there are no two necks with the exact same dimensions. So while it still has the basic characteristics of its respective profile, each neck will be slightly different, with a distinct but traditional feel.

Solid Mahogany Body
The most central of all V-Factor X features is its V-shaped, solid mahogany body. Whether it’s the regular Flying V, or the Gibson V-Factor X, the solid mahogany body provides tone, sustain, and performance. The mahogany goes through the same rigorous selection process as all of Gibson’s woods, and is personally inspected and qualified by Gibson’s team of skilled wood experts before it enters the factories. Inside the Gibson factories, humidity is maintained at 45 percent, and the temperature at 70 degrees. This insures all woods are dried to a level of “equilibrium,” where the moisture content does not change during the manufacturing process. This guarantees tight-fitting joints and no expansion, and helps control the shrinkage and warping of the woods, in addition to helping reduce the weight. It also helps with improving the woods’ machinability and finishing properties. Consistent moisture content means that a Gibson guitar will respond evenly to temperature and humidity changes long after it leaves the factory.

Review: My New Favorite Axe,
As others have said, most people will either love or hate this guitar based on looks alone. However, the tone and playability should make fans out of everyone. I purchased the ebony model. The package arrived at my home in a Gibson sealed factory box. Inside the box was a nice black Gibson USA case with white interior that goes quite well with the ebony version. Upon opening the case, the guitar inside was flawless. I will admit that it takes your eyes a minute to adjust to the look of the guitar, but don't dwell too much on that. Pick it up and start playing it, this is where this puppy really shines. The setup was perfect out of the box. I only had to adjust the tuning. Due to angle of the body, it is a breeze to play sitting down and puts the neck in a more classical position. Playing with a strap, the guitar is perfectly balanced and the weight is ideal, not too heavy, not too light. I'm running mine thru a Marshall tube and it screams! I don't miss the tone knob at all, as it is easy to adjust on the amp controls. I was worried I would have trouble hitting the higher notes, but this is not an issue for me. My only complaint would be the placement of the volume knob, I would've opted for it to be placed near the toggle switch as I tend to rest my hand in the area below the pickups, but I can get used to it. If you're on the fence about this one, just get it, you can't get a better instrument at this price.
